About British Airways

British Airways was founded on 31st March 1974 and is one of the world’s leading global premium airlines. British Airways is the largest international carrier in the UK. The airline has its hub at London Heathrow, the world’s busiest international airport.

British Airways flies to over 170 destinations in 70 countries. The airline has an impressive fleet of more than 280 aircraft, including the modern A380 and 787. Find out more about the BA fleet further down this page.

The airline carries in excess of 40 million customers per year. Some impressive and amusing statistics are that BA serves its’ customers 35 million cups of tea, 36.5 million meals and 3.7 million bottles of wine per year.

The advantages of flying with British Airways include:

  • Free food and drinks on all long-haul flights
  • Free seat selection within twenty-four hours of departure
  • Flights to mainstream airports are close to the destinations passengers want to travel to (unlike some low-cost airlines which fly to remote airports).
  • A generous free baggage allowance on applicable flights.

As of December 2016, British Airways has approximately 40,000 employees including an impressive 15,000 cabin crew, 3,600 pilots and 5,500 engineers.

On 25 August 2009, British Airways celebrated its 90th anniversary. The airline can trace its origins way back to the birth of civil aviation.

In 2016 British Airways celebrated 80 years of Nigeria flight operations. On 9 February 1936, the Weekly Imperial Airways flight from London to Khartoum connected with another fight to Kano, heralding the start of services to Nigeria. Today, Imperial Airways’ successor British Airways operates daily, direct Boeing 747 and 777 services to Abuja and Lagos.

Pablo De Renzis (Head of Middle East, Africa and Central Asia Sales),  said if the airline had been around in Nigeria for as long as 80 years, it meant a commitment to the country and successful business relationship. He went on to say that “The first flight from London to Kano took seven days, with some few stops in between. Now, the flying time is less than seven hours. Things have changed a lot now daily from Lagos and Abuja,”.

“These 80 years of flying into Nigeria confirms the commitment we have to the country. We are very happy with the relationship we have with Nigeria,” he stated.
